Rock styles
They keep telling me this.
1. There was no progressive in 90s and it's very unpopular current days
Not true. Prog is less popular now than in 70s but very much more popular than 10-15 years ago. In 90s a lot of new bright teams appeared but the main thing is there appeared a lot more independant new labels - Magna Carta, Lasers Edge, Musea, Dove, Mellotronen - isn't a sign of a growing interest?
Secondly - there are a lot of tributes coming of old art groups, we already have Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Jethro Tull - and performs of this monsters' songs are really new and little-known groups.
Third - old bands are ressurecting. New works of King Crimson, Yes, Camel, Marillion, Rush, Present, Univers Zero - it means they have listeners.
2. Progressive is rave / Progressive is grundge
It is so and it is not so. Without question progressive in it's electronic part gave impetus to ambient-technic exercises of modern groups like Apex Twins, Orb and Orbital. From the other side same Can, King Crimson, Hawkwind and High Tide with their sharp and raw sound possibly influenced grundge and other alternative styles.
BUT. Progressive rock group and progressive rock group are not the same things.
3. Art rock will never rise up to the hights set in the 70s.
Softly saying - it does not correspond with reality. In 70s virtuosic musiciants were less than today and standarts are standing here now. I won't contend that now art rock bands are better, but not worse - that's for sure. It's just another time on the streets, another interest, comptetition is harder and musical industry is totally changed.
